To unveil some of these concerning ingredients, we consulted health authorities Lisa Richards, the nutritionist behind The Candida Diet, and Joanna Wen, founder of Spices & Greens and an expert in weight loss coaching. They have identified vegetable oils and artificial sweeteners as two unsuspecting culprits to be cautious of.
- Vegetable oils Though vegetable oils might seem innocuous—sourced from vegetables, synonymous with health—Richards cautions that several vegetable oils are rife with inflammation-triggering properties that might impede your weight loss journey.
“Vegetable oils can induce inflammation due to an imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids,” she elaborates. “Both types are crucial for well-being, but the typical Western diet disproportionately skews towards omega-6 fatty acids, predominantly present in vegetable oils like corn, soybean, and sunflower oils.”
Overconsumption of omega-6 fatty acids, she reveals, can elevate the production of pro-inflammatory molecules in the body. Therefore, favoring wholesome fats is imperative. “Conversely, omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, possess anti-inflammatory attributes,” Richards highlights. Opting for olive oil rich in healthy fats as a replacement for vegetable oils is a prudent choice.
- Artificial sweeteners While steering clear of excessive sugar intake is known to mitigate various health risks, including weight gain, it might appear that artificial sweeteners offer a healthy alternative. Regrettably, Wen contends that these sugar substitutes can instigate inflammation as well.
“While perceived as a healthier substitute for sugar, artificial sweeteners can paradoxically contribute to bodily inflammation, exacerbating weight gain and other health concerns,” she cautions. Instead, a wiser strategy would be to favor natural sweeteners whenever feasible.
