Due to a school-imposed suspension, Michigan’s head coach, Jim Harbaugh, will be absent for the initial three games of the 2023 season. The team has outlined the allocation of coaching duties during his period of absence.
For the opening match of the season scheduled against East Carolina on September 2nd, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will assume the role of game-day coach. On September 9th, facing UNLV, a divided approach will be taken: Jay Harbaugh, the special-teams coordinator and safeties coach (also Jim’s son), will oversee the first half, while Mike Hart, the run-game coordinator and running backs coach, will take on the head coaching responsibilities for the second half. On September 16th, during the match against Bowling Green, the reins of the team will be in the hands of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore.
Throughout this period, Jim Harbaugh’s father, Jack Harbaugh, will contribute as the assistant head coach.
The question of whether the NCAA will impose further sanctions on Jim Harbaugh looms, stemming from allegations of dishonesty during an investigative process. Additionally, speculation persists about Harbaugh’s future with Michigan beyond this season, with uncertainties about a potential return to the NFL. Notably, Harbaugh had coached the 49ers from 2011 to 2014 and had undergone interviews with the Vikings in 2022 and the Broncos earlier in the current year.
