Microsoft has recently entered into a new collaborative venture with Synthetaic, an emerging AI and data analytics startup

The announcement, made on August 29th, outlines a five-year partnership wherein Microsoft will furnish Synthetaic with cloud-computing resources. Synthetaic specializes in harnessing artificial intelligence to scrutinize data derived from space and air sensors.

Hailing from Wisconsin, Synthetaic garnered attention earlier this year for its utilization of artificial intelligence in conjunction with Planet Labs’ repository of satellite images. This amalgamation allowed the startup to independently trace the trajectory of a Chinese spy balloon across the United States before its eventual interception.

Synthetaic’s flagship AI offering, the Rapid Automatic Image Categorization (RAIC) tool, was constructed using the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. Under the terms of this fresh accord, Microsoft will grant Synthetaic access to a substantial repository of cloud compute resources, encompassing nearly 1 million hours, as stated by the company.

In collaboration with Microsoft Azure Space, Synthetaic’s endeavors will encompass the creation of novel solutions tailored towards processing a range of imagery, including geospatial, static, and video, with applications spanning national security, disaster response, and environmental sustainability, in accordance with Corey Jaskolski, Founder and CEO of Synthetaic.

Jason Zander, Executive Vice President of Strategic Missions and Technologies at Microsoft, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in deciphering the copious volumes of data amassed by global governments and organizations. This partnership with Synthetaic is envisaged as a fusion of cutting-edge AI advancements and the startup’s adeptness in data analytics, aiming to augment our comprehension of the world, as articulated by Zander.

The RAIC data analysis tool is slated for availability to government agencies via the Microsoft Azure Government Cloud. This arrangement ensures that agencies can harness AI capabilities while adhering to the rigorous benchmarks for security and compliance requisite for handling sensitive governmental data.
