Sony Increases PlayStation Plus Prices by Up to $40 Per Year

Sony is set to raise the prices for its PlayStation Plus Premium subscription by up to $40 annually, beginning from next month. The company’s announcement on Wednesday stated that this price adjustment will be applicable to all tiers within the 12-month subscription and will be implemented across all regions where PlayStation Plus is available.

As outlined in a blog post, the previous Essential subscription cost will be increased from $60 to $80, while the Extra plan will see a jump from $100 to $135, and the Premium tier will experience a rise from $120 to $160.

Sony has highlighted its anticipation for the upcoming game lineup in September, featuring titles like Saints Row, Black Desert – Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero. These games will be available for download between September 5 and October 2. The company justified the price increase by stating that it will enable them to maintain the delivery of high-quality games and added benefits to subscribers through the PlayStation Plus service.

However, Sony has not revealed any information regarding potential increases in costs for the one and three-month subscription options.

The inception of PlayStation Plus dates back to 2010, with varying options for users to access games at different price points over the years. Initially, the yearly fee was just $50, a stark contrast to the premium membership fee of $160 that subscribers will be required to pay by the year’s end.

Originally, subscribers were presented with a single 12-month subscription option. However, last year, Sony introduced tiered alternatives, with premium subscribers gaining access to classic games that boasted improved frame rates and higher resolution compared to their original releases.

Coinciding with Microsoft’s prior increase in subscription prices for the Xbox Game Pass in July, Sony’s price adjustments come into view. Microsoft’s change will be effective from September 6 for new subscribers, while existing subscribers will witness the price hike either upon their next renewal date or by November 6, whichever comes earlier.
