The potential sluggishness of Apple’s iPhone 15 USB-C compared to the Lightning cable

Speculations about the inclusion of a USB-C charging port and cable for enhanced charging and data speeds in the iPhone 15 began circulating more than a year ago. However, as we approach the launch of the new iPhone at Apple’s September event, it seems this might not be the complete picture.

Recent rumors suggest that the USB-C cable for the iPhone 15 might likely adhere to USB 2.0 standards, resulting in data transfer rates of up to 480Mbps. This is on par with the current data transfer speed of the Lightning cable used in the iPhone 14 series. Nonetheless, some leaks propose the possibility of a Thunderbolt cable being bundled with the iPhone 15 Pro variant.

Reportedly, the USB-C-to-USB-C charging cable for the iPhone 15 is designed to be more durable and substantial, spanning a length of 1.6 meters. This is an increase compared to the one-meter Lightning cable that is currently packaged with iPhones.

The same rumors also indicate that Apple could potentially include a Thunderbolt cable with the iPhone 15 Pro models. Presently, Apple sells the Thunderbolt 3 cable separately for $40, and it is not part of the standard accessories for the iPad Pro or other devices.

If the iPhone 15 Pro does indeed come with a Thunderbolt cable, users could experience data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps, which is twice as fast as USB 3.2. Additionally, this Thunderbolt cable would allow for quicker 150W charging, even though the iPhone might only be capable of reaching 35W charging speeds. For comparison, the current iPhone 14 models can achieve charging speeds of up to 27W.

There are also claims circulating on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) that the iPhone 15 Pro models will ship with a Thunderbolt cable. If this holds true, the included cable is expected to be slightly shorter than the existing Thunderbolt cable, measuring just under one meter.

Apple has confirmed its intention to align with EU regulations mandating the integration of USB-C across electronic devices by 2024. Consequently, it’s reasonably certain that the iPhone 15 will be the first in the iPhone series to feature a USB-C port.

As we approach Apple’s launch event scheduled for September 12, specific details remain uncertain. Until then, speculation is all that can be done.
